Dog Bite Laws in Colorado
In Colorado, a specific statute has been enacted that deals with dog bites causing "serious bodily injury." Under Colorado Revised Statutes Section 13-21-124, if a dog bite results in serious bodily injury, the dog’s owner can be held strictly liable, regardless of whether the dog has been vicious before or the owner knew it could be.
However, not all injuries fall under "serious bodily injury." This term is defined as an injury that involves a substantial risk of death, severe permanent disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of the function of any part or organ of the body. It can also include fractures and broken bones.

Dog Bite Injuries
Dog bites can result in many injuries, from minor abrasions to life-threatening conditions. Not all dog bite injuries fall under “serious bodily injury.”
Injuries can include:
- Abrasions: Superficial wounds or scrapes on the skin's surface.
- Lacerations: Deep cuts can result in zig-zag patterns and profuse bleeding.
- Punctures: Small but deep holes caused by the dog's teeth penetrating the skin.
- Infections: Dog bites can lead to severe infections, including rabies and tetanus.
- Crushing Injuries: These occur when the force of the bite compresses the tissue, potentially causing severe damage.
- Muscle, Tissue, and Ligament Damage: Dog bites can cause severe damage to muscles, tissues, ligaments, and tendons.
- Broken Bones: Particularly aggressive or large dogs can bite hard enough to fracture bones.
- Head, Neck, and Eye Injuries: These can result from attacks to the face and can lead to permanent disfigurement. Concussions and brain injuries can result from victims being knocked to the ground.
- Broken or Damaged Teeth: Large dogs can lunge or jump on victims, knocking them down and causing dental damage and other injuries.
- Scarring: Many dog bite victims are left with visible scars, which can cause emotional distress.
- Nerve Damage: A deep bite can sever nerves, leading to loss of sensation or function.
- Emotional Trauma: The psychological impact of a dog attack can be profound, leading to conditions such as nightmares, anxiety attacks, and PTSD.
