A few days ago, a recent statewide campaign to stop impaired drivers just ended. This is the first campaign of its sort for the year. There are more to come as the DUI issue remains a big one in Colorado.

According to a recent report, a total of 119 law enforcement groups from around the state took part in this effort. They were on the lookout for drivers impaired by drugs, cannabis or alcohol. This is the first of 14 such campaigns the state typically runs during the year.

In 2017, DUI enforcement patrols resulted in over 10,000 arrests. A total of 357 of those arrests occurred just over New Years. All in all, last year saw an increase in arrests compared to previous years.

Why do these patrols matter? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2016, nearly 10,500 people lost their lives in auto collisions caused by drunk or impaired drivers — 1,233 of them were children. In 2017 in Colorado, one-third of all fatal auto accidents were caused by impaired drivers.

There are thousands of reasons to look out for and stop impaired drivers. These DUI enforcement campaigns are run for a good reason. However, they may also result in people being falsely accused or facing serious consequences that can affect them both personally and professionally. Those in Colorado who are arrested and charged with DUI — regardless if it occurs during one of these enforcement campaigns — has the right to defend him or herself. An experienced criminal defense attorney can help with that.
