Police in Colorado arrested two college football players on allegations related to theft at their university. Each player is facing serious charges, and both have been suspended from team-related activities for the foreseeable future. This is a typical reaction from many university sport teams, and it is in no way an indication of the guilt of either party.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 12, 2016. On that date, police say that multiple items worth thousands of dollars were stolen from a dorm room on campus. Among the items taken from the dorm room were a laptop, a gaming console and related video games, along with additional electronic items.
In addition to theft charges for the electronics, the two students are both also charged with possessing prescription medication. The prescription codeine that prompted those charges was also allegedly taken from the dorm room. It is not clear whether the codeine found in the dorm room was initially obtained via a medical prescription.
Facing felony burglary, drug and theft charges, as well as misdemeanors, is an understandably intimidating experience for anyone in Colorado. For young students who have their entire lives still ahead of them, the lifelong impact of a conviction is even more profound. Early preparation can be a good start to minimizing the potential impact whether defendants are facing serious charges or misdemeanors. Defendants have the option of fighting the charges in court or negotiating plea deals with the prosecution, if offered, and timely planning can give men and women facing criminal allegations opportunities to craft the most solid defense strategies possible.
