An accident involving a Colorado police officer led to the arrest of a 30-year-old driver. Attending officers allege that the woman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the wreck. She is currently facing multiple charges, including a felony DUI.
Police claim that the wreck occurred while the state trooper was in the process of carrying out a traffic stop. However, he was actually in his patrol vehicle at the time and not standing alongside the road or the other car. Before he had a chance to exit the vehicle, he claims that an approaching car sideswiped his patrol car. He was not seriously injured in the incident.
The car that allegedly struck the police vehicle did not actually stop at the scene of the accident, and the trooper took off after the driver. The chase apparently did not last long, and it is not yet clear as to how the chase actually ended. When it did, though, the driver was arrested and taken to an area jail to be booked. No bail has been set for the driver at this time.
The driver’s felony DUI charge stems from Colorado state law, that mandates an arrest following three previous convictions for drunk driving be charged as a felony. A fourth DUI conviction can lead to a possible $500,000 fine and six years behind bars. No matter if a defendant is facing a felony or a misdemeanor, each and every individual is still presumed innocent on all current charges regardless of the outcome of previous criminal allegations.
