Reality show fans in Colorado might already be familiar with Richard Wyatt, star of the American Guns show that aired for approximately one year. Although Wyatt made a name for himself on the popular reality show, he made headlines more recently when he voluntarily surrendered to police. He has since been indicted on multiple criminal allegations.
After Wyatt apparently violated certain federal regulations in 2012, his store — Gunsmoke — surrendered its Federal Firearms License. Authorities say that he never attempted to get a new license, instead opting to continue selling firearms without the proper paperwork. He then apparently utilized a second company as a straw licensee for Gunsmoke. In doing so, another business with a valid license ran the necessary background checks and then handed over the firearms that were purchased at Gunsmoke.
Additional allegations include tax fraud for his apparent failure to file accurate tax returns. According to the IRS, Wyatt paid nothing in personal income taxes for 2009, 2010 and 2012 despite earning six-figure incomes. He is also accused of not paying necessary corporate taxes from 2010 through 2012.
Wyatt is currently still behind bars without the possibility to post bond. Although many defendants in Colorado do have the opportunity for bond, the final decision to grant this privilege is with a judge, who might deem that a defendant is either a flight risk or that the allegations are too severe to warrant the option. However, a lack of bond in no way indicates any manner of guilt, and cannot be used as a determining factor during criminal court proceedings.
